Opinion writer Jayden Shipley reviews Dwayne Johnson’s performance in The Smashing Machine. This op-ed does not necessarily reflect the views of the University Daily Kansan and its members.
The Smashing Machine has sparked mixed reactions globally. Some viewers believe it deserves Oscar talks, while others see it as another missed opportunity for Johnson. For those who don’t appreciate Johnson’s work here, it's unlikely they will enjoy his films at all.
Johnson plays Mark Kerr, an MMA fighter battling addiction and coping with personal loss. The film follows many elements of the documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr, even recreating several shots exactly as seen in the original. Real fighters like Ryan Bader and Oleksandr Usyk appear, adding to the film’s authenticity.
The film’s realism hinges on believable performances, which have been a challenge for Johnson historically. Critics have argued he often just plays himself rather than a distinct character. However, this biographical drama showcases a remarkable transformation, as Johnson adjusts his mannerisms, voice, and physique to fully embody Kerr.
Besides Johnson’s portrayal, much discussion centers on Emily Blunt, with opinions divided on whether her role was underused in the film.
“The film even recreates some of the shots exactly like the documentary.”
“You have to believe in the performances, which has been a struggle for Johnson in the past.”
Overall, Johnson’s nuanced embodiment of a complex figure proves his growing strength in dramatic roles, even as debates continue over the supporting cast's impact.
