A coalition of 26 environmental, health, legal, and community organizations across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) has called on Toronto City Council to oppose the province's new energy plan. They warn it threatens the city’s climate objectives and will perpetuate fossil fuel reliance for decades.
On October 31, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) released its final Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) for Toronto. The plan is seen as a significant obstacle to Toronto’s net-zero ambitions.
“Despite clear direction from Toronto City Council—which has committed to phasing out the Portlands Energy Centre by 2035 and achieving net-zero by 2040 under the TransformTO plan—the IESO’s proposal takes the city in the opposite direction.”
The groups emphasize the need for Toronto to stick to its climate commitments and avoid policies that lock in dirty energy infrastructure.
The coalition stresses that continuing reliance on fossil fuels will undermine public health and delay meaningful climate progress in the region.
The province's energy plan contradicts Toronto’s climate goals and may entrench fossil fuel dependence, risking public health and environmental sustainability.
