Auburn University announced on Sunday the dismissal of head football coach Hugh Freeze, ending a turbulent tenure of over two seasons following a 10–3 loss on Saturday night.
Freeze, 56, completed his Auburn tenure with a 15–19 overall record across 32 games. His SEC record had struggled in recent years, including a 1–5 start in SEC play this season.
“We haven't gotten the results,” said Freeze.
Critics cited Auburn's difficulties against ranked opponents and poor conference performance as major reasons for the coaching change. The team remained winless in the SEC this season after a 10-3 loss to Kentucky on November 1.
Athletic Director John Cohen addressed the firing, emphasizing the need for change. Freeze was hired mid-2022 on a six-year contract reportedly worth $39 million. His buyout was estimated around $15.4 million.
Freeze was charged with restoring Auburn to SEC prominence, but the 15–19 record and ongoing conference challenges fueled dissatisfaction among fans and boosters.
