In the 2026–2027 season, Reed Sheppard, the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, is set to earn $11.1 million, while Amen Thompson, selected fourth in the 2023 draft, will make $12.3 million. Despite his option being picked up, Thompson is expected to pursue a long-term contract extension during the offseason—a situation similar to last year’s case with Jabari Smith Jr., whose option was exercised before he signed a new deal later.
Increased Roles Amid VanVleet’s Absence
With point guard Fred VanVleet sidelined, both Thompson and Sheppard have stepped into expanded roles this season.
- Amen Thompson: Averaging 33.5 minutes, 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.5 turnovers per game while starting every match as Houston’s primary point guard.
- Reed Sheppard: Posting 22.5 minutes, 10 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 turnovers per game.

After four games, the Rockets hold a defensive rating of 116 (19th in the NBA) but boast the league’s top offensive rating at 125.2. The team’s young core continues to establish balance and momentum early in the season.
