Actor Simu Liu confirmed that he will return as Shang-Chi in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. The project is slated for release on December 18, 2026, and brings together an ensemble cast from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a recent interview, Liu shared his excitement about working alongside some of the most iconic Marvel actors, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Florence Pugh as Yelena.
“There are just so many actors in it, and getting to work with those people as peers is really incredible because I grew up watching so many of them,” Liu told ScreenRant.
“It feels, in a lot of ways, like a love letter to the entire genre of superhero movies. And I think there’s something really fun about that,” Liu said.
He also emphasized that the film celebrates individuality and courage, resonating with fans who grew up reading comic books and finding inspiration in flawed yet heroic characters.
“It’s for all the misfits, the weirdos, and the underdogs that grew up reading comic books and feeling hopeful — that even if they didn’t fit in, there was a place for them,” he added.
The screenplay for Avengers: Doomsday is penned by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing. The movie will continue Marvel’s tradition of blending large-scale spectacle with character-driven storytelling.
Simu Liu describes Avengers: Doomsday as a heartfelt tribute to the superhero movie legacy, celebrating individuality, unity, and the enduring spirit of Marvel’s cinematic world.
