Police in Stockport are investigating an arson incident near the Marple war memorial just days before Remembrance Sunday. The event has caused significant outrage among residents and community leaders.
Emergency services were called around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, after reports of a group of males near the Cenotaph in Marple. A fire had been started in a bin, and wooden pallets were also set alight, causing damage to the surrounding ground.
Local reaction has been strong, particularly on community Facebook groups and from local councillors.
“This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated,”
said Marple North councillor Steve Gribbon.
“This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. Police units arrived on scene within minutes and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. We are working closely with partners at Stockport Council and the fire service to ensure the area is cleaned and restored,”
said Police Sergeant Rachel Walton of the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Marple neighbourhood officers are asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward and assist the investigation.
