Church of Jesus Christ Names Bishop Gérald Caussé as New Apostle

SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Thursday that Presiding Bishop Gérald Caussé has been called as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

At 62, Elder Caussé has served as the Church’s presiding bishop for the past eleven years. His ordination took place the same day under the direction of President Dallin H. Oaks and the other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

“I've always had a testimony of Jesus Christ,” Elder Caussé said in a church news release. “He's always been at the center of my life. And I know He is our Savior and Redeemer. What a wonderful thing it is to be a witness of Christ. That’s the greatest stewardship we can have in life.”

Elder Caussé was born in Bordeaux, France. He was the third presiding bishop born outside the United States and the first for whom English is a second language. Before his current calling, he served as a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric and as a General Authority Seventy.

He married Valérie Babin on August 5, 1986, in the Bern Switzerland Temple. His church responsibilities have taken his family to live in Germany and the United States.

Author’s Summary

Gérald Caussé, previously the presiding bishop, has been ordained as an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ, marking a historic moment for international leadership within the faith.
