An annual campaign to support war veterans, widows, and active soldiers began this week with the presentation of a poppy to the Governor. Andrew Murdoch received this symbolic emblem from the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s Honorary Colonel, David Gibbons, marking the start of Bermuda’s annual Poppy Appeal.
The appeal raises funds to assist former and serving soldiers in need. Poppies are available at various points around the City of Hamilton today and tomorrow.
The Remembrance Day parade is set for Tuesday to honor those who died in the two world wars and other Allied Forces campaigns. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. on Front Street, where wreaths will be laid at the Cenotaph by Mr. Murdoch, Premier David Burt, and other dignitaries.
“The Royal Bermuda Regiment, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary year, will support the ceremony with a guard on parade and will be joined by the Bermuda Police Service, sea cadets, and the Junior Leaders,” a government spokeswoman said.
Musical performances will be provided by the RBR Band and Corps of Drums, the Somerset Brigade Band, the Salvation Army Divisional Band, the North Village Band, and the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band.
The parade will cause road closures on Tuesday morning. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
