Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day Message from the Chair of the Council

This Sunday, 9 November, marks Remembrance Sunday, a day to honor the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian personnel who served in the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The observance continues on Tuesday, 11 November, Armistice Day, with the Royal British Legion at 11 a.m., featuring a two-minute silence to commemorate the end of World War One.

Words from the Chair of the Council

“For many people, Remembrance is associated with the fallen of the First and Second World Wars, to whom we owe an incalculable debt of gratitude. I note that this year marks the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, VJ Day, and the Battle of Britain: three key events in the World War Two narrative.
The practical nature of conflict may have evolved, but the core horror of war remains unchanged. With ongoing global unrest, it is vital to also remember the sacrifices made in more recent conflicts including the Falklands, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
We are grateful for the dedication of those who protect our safety daily—our active Service personnel, Blue Light services, and the families who support them.”

Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are moments to reflect on sacrifice, history, and ongoing service across generations.

Author’s summary: These commemorations honor the sacrifices of past and present service members, emphasizing the enduring impact of war and the importance of remembering all who serve.
