Starting later today, cloud streaming will be officially available on the PlayStation Portal, allowing gamers to play titles on the handheld device without needing to connect to a PS5 console.
After two years since its release and a year-long beta phase, the PlayStation Plus handheld can now stream games directly, without requiring a connection to a PS5. Although the device does not run games independently, this requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
At launch in 2023, the PlayStation Portal faced criticism for limited power and portability. Unlike previous handhelds like the PSP and PS Vita, which played games independently, the Portal could only operate by remotely connecting to a PS5.
“While previous Sony handhelds like the PSP and PS Vita were able to play games on their own, disconnected from the internet, at launch the PS Portal could only play games by remotely connecting to a PS5—something gamers could already do on other devices like mobile phones.”
This restriction reduced the Portal's appeal, making it seem more like an accessory than a standalone console.
The new cloud streaming functionality transforms the PlayStation Portal into a more independent device, significantly enhancing its practicality and user experience.
The official launch of cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal finally frees the device from needing a PS5, marking a major step toward its independence and boosting its value as a handheld console.
