Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown has been extradited from the United Arab Emirates to the United States to face an attempted murder charge, according to US authorities. The transfer concludes months of legal uncertainty following his departure to Dubai.
Miami Police spokesperson Michael Vega reported that US Marshals detained Brown in Dubai on Thursday before his extradition to New Jersey. He is currently being held there, pending his transfer to Miami.
Police said the arrest relates to a May incident involving gunfire outside a celebrity boxing match in Miami. Following the event, Brown posted on X that he had been attacked and briefly detained before his release. An arrest warrant was issued in June, after which Brown dismissed the allegations as false on X.
Despite the warrant, Brown resurfaced in Dubai later in June, posting a photo from a local boxing retailer, although he misleadingly tagged the photo’s location as Iran.
Antonio Brown played twelve seasons in the National Football League as a wide receiver. He was regarded as one of the league’s elite players and earned a Super Bowl victory with Tom Brady in 2021. Brown has publicly discussed suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a neurological condition caused by repeated head injuries, and is also known for controversial off-field behavior.
“I was jumped,” Brown wrote on X, claiming he was “temporarily detained” by police before being freed.
Police described the charges as related to shots fired near the Miami event in May.
The case drew attention because the US and UAE lack an extradition treaty—a point that previously shaped proceedings involving Binance founder Changpeng Zhao.
