ISLAMABAD: Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza was arrested by Islamabad police early Friday and later handed over to their counterparts in Faisalabad. He has since been transferred to the Faisalabad Central Jail.
According to police sources, Raza was wanted in multiple cases related to acts of vandalism and violent protests targeting state institutions. He had previously been convicted by an anti-terrorism court in connection with the May 9 riots but had gone into hiding.
Authorities confirmed that Raza was presented before a local court, which ordered his detention at the Faisalabad Central Jail.
In July, a special anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Faisalabad convicted Raza along with several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, and Zartaj Gul, in a case stemming from the violence at the Civil Lines Police Station on May 9, 2023.
The convicts were sentenced to prison terms of up to 45 years in multiple cases linked to the May 9 violent protests.
Police arrested Sahibzada Hamid Raza for his role in the May 9 riots, transferring him to Faisalabad Jail following his earlier anti-terrorism conviction.
