Lambeth Council has approved plans to deliver 278 new homes in Herne Hill, with an increase of 60 additional units on the site east of Shakespeare Road. The developer, L&G, originally received permission for 218 homes in December 2021.
The revised plans involve modifications to three buildings, enabling the delivery of more affordable, high-quality housing for local residents. Earlier this year, residents participated in consultations regarding the proposals.
The site previously housed a waste transfer station, which was demolished following a fire in August 2023.
Cllr Danny Adilypour, Deputy Leader of Lambeth Council and Cabinet Member for Housing, Investment and New Homes said:
“This new scheme reflects the borough’s commitment to tackling the housing crisis and ensuring developments deliver real benefits for local communities.
Such benefits complement our own ambition to deliver over 600 new affordable and social rent homes on council land by 2030.
Each of these 278 new homes will include an energy-efficient heat-sourced air pump, aligning with the council’s objectives to tackle both the housing crisis and the climate crisis."
The project combines efforts to address local housing needs alongside environmental priorities.
Author’s summary: Lambeth Council advances sustainable housing with 278 new energy-efficient homes, including 35% affordable options, reinforcing its commitment to community benefits and climate goals.
