The Seattle Sounders forced a decisive third match in Round One after a commanding attacking display against Minnesota United on Monday night. Facing one of the toughest defenses in MLS, the Sounders managed to dismantle the Loons with an energetic and focused approach.
After a narrow penalty shootout loss in the first match of the series, Seattle responded with a confident 4-2 win at Lumen Field, ensuring their playoff journey continues and setting up a final clash between the two Western Conference rivals.
“We were just more dynamic, more decisive, more aggressive,” said midfielder Obed Vargas. “We believed the ball was going to go in the back of the net. We just scrapped. I felt like we were winning the duels, we were winning the battle, and all those little details gave us that momentum.”
The team entered Match 2 fully aware of the importance of an early goal to build confidence and stretch the Loons’ deep defensive line. Vargas emphasized the tactical mindset, explaining how the team’s quick start pushed Minnesota to “come out of their shell.”
Applying pressure from the opening whistle, the Sounders broke through in the first ten minutes when Vargas launched a left-footed strike past goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair from the top of the box.
“It was a great start,” said forward Jordan Morris. “In the first game we couldn’t manage that, and they made it tough. But Obed had a great finish, and it kind of opened the game up for us.”
The Sounders regained momentum with a bold 4-2 win over Minnesota, showing renewed attacking energy and determination to extend their postseason campaign.
