This is the way it is: How Ita is coping with a life-changing condition

Ita, aged 83, remains positive despite facing uncertainty after a back surgery in 2021. Soon after, symptoms appeared that led to a diagnosis of isolated gait disorder.

Adjusting to new challenges

"I haven't walked properly since the back surgery," Ita shared. She now relies on a wheelchair and depends on others for mobility, which she describes as an adjustment.

“I'm dependent on other people to help me get around and that's one of the adjustments.”

Doctors are unsure whether her back operation caused the condition or if it will worsen over time.

Focusing on the positives

Instead of dwelling on her changed circumstances, Ita chooses to focus on benefits such as the relief from back pain.

“I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have.”

Frustrations and achievements

Ita expresses frustration over the lack of funding for research into her illness, emphasizing the unpredictability of life.

“Life is full of detours.”

Despite her challenges, she completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, her second memoir and the first written without the pressure of a full-time job.

“It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do.”

Author's summary: Ita, confronting a disabling condition, embraces positivity and creativity, adapting her life philosophy and continuing to pursue her passion for writing.
