Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed that the Liberal government sees the dismantling of Canada Post as a trial for broader worker attacks planned by the ruling class. Daniel Berkley, a postal worker and a leader in the Postal Workers Rank-and-File Committee (PWRFC), highlights this concern.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) appears close to signing an agreement with Canada Post that would impose significant cuts to jobs and working conditions, according to multiple media reports.
Bargaining resumed on Monday, November 3, with CUPW issuing a statement praising the government-appointed mediator’s support. The union leadership announced their willingness to “overcome the disagreements between the parties” and “secure ratifiable collective agreements at the bargaining table.”
In a separate statement, CUPW politely urged the Liberal government, which supports plans to cut two-thirds of Canada Post’s 55,000 employees, “to ensure that any decisions… are made… with Union input.”
“The destruction of Canada Post in its current form is a testing ground for the attacks that the ruling class plans to mount against all workers.”

This situation marks a critical clash between union efforts and government-backed reforms threatening the future of postal workers and their labor rights.
