After a lengthy offseason filled with uncertainty about his future, Russell Westbrook found a new team with the Sacramento Kings, starting his 18th NBA season.
Westbrook revealed that leaving the Denver Nuggets was not his choice, as the organization informed him they did not want him back for another year. He had the option to remain with Denver for the 2025–26 season due to a player option in his one-year contract signed in summer 2024.
Returning to Denver to play against his former team on Monday, Westbrook explained the real reason he didn’t exercise the option. Following the game, where he scored 26 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and provided 6 assists, he opened up about the situation.
“The truth is that they didn’t want me back,” he said in an interview with The Denver Post. “Somebody else do.”
Westbrook appeared to enjoy a career revival in his role as a backup with the Nuggets, averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. Despite his strong performance, Denver chose to go in a different direction.
Reflecting on his season with Denver, Westbrook stated,
“I thought it was great. I guess other people didn’t.”
When asked about his feelings regarding the season's end, Westbrook responded with optimism:
“Every part of this journey for me is always a positive impact.”
Russell Westbrook left the Denver Nuggets because the team decided not to retain him, despite his player option, and he views his season and career progress with a positive outlook.
