The long-standing rivalry between the New Zealand Kiwis and Toa Samoa reaches another chapter as both teams prepare for the Pacific Championship men’s final. Kickoff is set for 6:05pm on Sunday, November 9, at Go Media Stadium.
The sides met just three weeks ago, when New Zealand narrowly escaped with a 24-18 victory. Samoa missed at least two key scoring chances in the final minutes, which could have changed the result.
Toa Samoa have never beaten the Kiwis in six encounters, but several matches have been tight. In 2014, New Zealand edged Samoa 14-12 in Whangārei thanks to a late try from centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall, eventually going on to win the Four Nations title.
In the 2023 Pacific Championships, the Kiwis recorded a dominant 50-0 win, with wingers Jamayne Isaako and Ronaldo Mulitalo each crossing for two tries. Isaako also landed seven conversions from nine attempts.
Historically, Samoa were treated as warm-up opponents for stronger sides. However, the growing return of top-tier players to their Pacific roots has strengthened the team and made this contest more competitive.
Samoa’s breakthrough came at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup. After suffering a heavy 60-6 loss to England in pool play, they exacted revenge with a 27-26 semifinal win before falling 30-10 to Australia in the final.
"Samoa have been transformed from underdogs into genuine contenders on the world stage."
The fierce NZ Kiwis–Toa Samoa rivalry showcases rising Pacific rugby strength, with Samoa evolving into a true powerhouse capable of challenging rugby league’s traditional elites.
