The Vancouver Canucks started their season dealing with numerous injuries, and now star goaltender Thatcher Demko has missed practice, raising questions about his condition.
After practice, Adam Foote addressed Demko's absence, explaining the goaltender is taking precautionary rest due to the demanding schedule.
“We had a conversation with him to take care of himself, and know, in a condensed schedule, when he feels he needs a little bit of time off, that’s what he’s doing,” Foote said. “I don’t want to say words that you people don’t like, like maintenance, or anything.”
When directly asked if Demko was injured, Foote denied it and shared his own experience with managing his health during his playing career.
“I had back surgery in my second year pro, okay? As my career went on… I had to be responsible when I go to the coaches, when to take a day,” Foote recalled. “He’s got to take care of himself. I respect that he’s going to take care of making sure that, in a condensed schedule, we’ve got him at his best.”
Foote also highlighted Demko's dedication and unwillingness to miss practice unless necessary.
“He’s such a great leader that he doesn’t want to ever miss a day,” Foote added.
Thatcher Demko is resting strategically amid a tight schedule, with the Canucks respecting his need to maintain peak performance without confirmed injury.
