Interim head coach Frank Wilson made the decision to bench senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in favor of sophomore Michael Van Buren during LSU's game against Alabama.
In his first game leading LSU football, Wilson answered the calls of many fans who wanted a change at quarterback. Midway through the third quarter at Bryant-Denny Stadium, he inserted Van Buren for Nussmeier.
“As we discussed as a staff, we knew there could be opportunities in the quarterback run game. (Alabama) would make it more difficult sitting in the pocket. We wanted to move (Van Buren) around and do some things. I thought that he gave us a chance to do those things. That went into the thought.”

Wilson’s quarterback change emphasized mobility to challenge Alabama’s defense, ultimately narrowing the score but not enough to secure a win.
