Kevin Lankinen will start for the second consecutive night against the Colorado Avalanche. Thatcher Demko, who skated Sunday morning, is a potential starter for Tuesday’s game against the Jets. Jiri Patera will serve as backup for tonight’s matchup at Rogers Arena.
Lankinen previously handled back-to-back starts last season, making 23 saves in a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on March 11, followed by a 20-save performance in a 4-3 win in Calgary the next night. Tonight, he faces the high-scoring duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas, who have combined for 21 goals and 42 points. The Avalanche enter the game with a 9-1-5 record after a 9-1 victory over the Oilers on Saturday.
“Thatcher felt good, he had a good day,” Foote said of the Sunday skate. “For me, it looks like he will (play) Tuesday, and I’ll deal with it later when you (media) guys get mad at me if he doesn’t.”
Lankinen was unaware Saturday night, after making 29 saves in a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, that he would be starting again tonight.
With Demko being rested for the demanding schedule ahead—including Tuesday’s game against Winnipeg and a three-game southeastern road trip starting Friday in Carolina—head coach Adam Foote indicated Demko could face the Jets.
Author’s summary: Kevin Lankinen steps in for back-to-back starts as the Canucks prepare for a tough stretch, while Thatcher Demko remains a possibility for Tuesday’s game against Winnipeg.
