Germantown, Maryland-based startup Whisker Labs has launched a free tool that provides real-time alerts about power outages and electrical fire risks across the United States, sometimes even before utilities are aware of the issues.
Using data gathered from its smart sensor network spread nationwide, anyone can now access the app without needing a device to monitor nearby electrical incidents.
“This data is one of a kind,” CEO Bob Marshall told Technical.ly. “Utilities don’t even know, for the most part, until people call them that the power is out in a neighborhood.”
Marshall emphasizes that sharing this information is vital for public safety, especially as electrical grids face growing strain.
The United States has experienced double the number of power disruptions in the last decade compared to the previous one, according to a 2024 report by Climate Central.
These features help residents make informed decisions, especially after extreme weather events.
“If you’ve got medical equipment or you’ve got pets, you need to know when the power is out,” Marshall said.
Whisker Labs’ innovative app empowers the public with early power outage alerts, enhancing safety as electrical grids face increasing disruptions nationwide.
