On Sunday evening, San Pedro Town experienced a sudden blackout when a transformer near Ramon’s Village Resort malfunctioned shortly after 6:00 p.m. Residents reported hearing a loud noise similar to an explosion.
The Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) confirmed the outage was due to a hardware failure on the overhead section of the 34.5 kV sub-transmission line supplying power to the island. This line links San Pedro to the national grid using a mix of submarine, underground, and overhead systems.
Typically, BEL’s San Pedro Gas Turbine acts as a backup during outages, but it was unavailable because it depends on the same affected transmission line.
Bad weather further complicated repair efforts, causing delays in restoring power to the town.
The outage was caused by “a hardware fault on the overhead portion of the 34.5 kV sub-transmission line that supplies power to the island.”
BEL noted the gas turbine “could not be activated because it relies on the same damaged transmission line.”
Author's summary: A hardware failure on San Pedro’s main power line caused a blackout, with backup systems compromised and bad weather delaying repairs.
