Emmy Award winner and Tony nominee Eddie Izzard returns with a one-person performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet from 10 to 21 June 2026 at the Sydney Opera House. Following sold-out seasons in the United States and the United Kingdom, the acclaimed show brings a new dimension to the timeless tragedy.
Adapted by Mark Izzard and directed by Selina Cadell, the play is staged on a bare set to highlight the language and emotional depth of Shakespeare’s storytelling. Eddie Izzard will embody all 23 characters in this powerful production, recreating the spirit of Shakespeare’s original performances.
“I have always gravitated towards playing complex and demanding characters. This production is for everyone – a timeless drama with an accidental hero,” said Eddie Izzard.
“Selina, Mark and I want audiences to see and hear an accessible, touching, scary and dramatic Hamlet,” added Izzard, reflecting on the creative team’s vision.
“This is a rare opportunity for Sydney to experience Eddie’s dramatic flair. Her one-person rendering of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy offers audiences an intimate, engrossing performance. This is Eddie Izzard and Hamlet as you’ve never seen them before,” said Harry Prouse, Acting Head of Contemporary Performance at the Sydney Opera House.
This marks Eddie Izzard’s second solo stage project, following the critically acclaimed run of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, which captivated audiences in New York and London.
Eddie Izzard’s bold solo rendition of Hamlet promises a powerful blend of intensity and intimacy, showcasing the performer’s range and deep respect for Shakespeare’s timeless art.
