Côte d’Ivoire: After Long Wait, Abidjan’s 55-Km Bypass Nears December Opening

Abidjan’s Y4 Ring Road Nears Completion by End of 2025

The government of Côte d’Ivoire announced that construction of the Abidjan Y4 ring road—also known as the Y4 Motorway—will be completed by December 2025. The 55-kilometer bypass is designed to reduce traffic congestion in the city’s core areas.

Progress and Project Overview

The project, funded jointly by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Ivorian state, is valued at approximately 218 million US dollars. It forms a key component of the broader Abidjan Urban Transport Project, which seeks to modernize and expand the capital’s road infrastructure.

Latest Construction Update

During a recent inspection visit, Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Equipment and Road Maintenance, Dr. Amédé Koffi Kouakou, confirmed that construction is nearly complete across all segments of the highway.

“The Abidjan ring road, known as the Y4 Motorway, will be completed by the end of December 2025,” said Minister Amédé Koffi Kouakou during his site visit.

Expected Impact on Urban Mobility

Authorities expect the bypass to play a vital role in alleviating traffic pressure in the city center. According to Ageroute, congestion in Abidjan remains severe because the number of vehicles keeps increasing while most major arteries still pass through the downtown area and port access roads.

Author’s summary: The 55-kilometer Y4 ring road in Abidjan, nearing completion in December 2025, represents a major infrastructure milestone aimed at reducing chronic congestion in Côte d’Ivoire’s largest city.
