The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recently released about 65,000 large rainbow trout into 25 lakes throughout the state to mark the annual Black Friday fishing event. These specially stocked fish, known as jumbo trout, weigh between one and two pounds each, offering anglers an exciting post-Thanksgiving outdoor activity.
According to the agency, the program aims to encourage families to embrace outdoor recreation during the holiday weekend. Popular fishing locations include lakes in King, Pierce, Spokane, and Yakima counties. The WDFW website provides a full interactive map displaying all participating lakes and current fishing regulations.
“This event gives anglers a unique opportunity to enjoy some peaceful time outdoors and try catching some impressive trout,” a WDFW spokesperson said.
The stocking effort supports local tourism and small businesses that depend on seasonal outdoor activity. The department also noted that the fish are raised in hatcheries following environmental sustainability guidelines to maintain a balanced ecosystem.
