The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has released 65,000 jumbo rainbow trout into 25 lakes across the state, continuing a long-time Black Friday tradition that encourages families and anglers to get outdoors after Thanksgiving.
Each of the "jumbo" trout weighs between one and a half to three pounds, significantly larger than the typical catch. The WDFW notes that these larger fish are grown in hatcheries and distributed throughout Washington to enhance recreational fishing opportunities during the holiday weekend.
According to the agency, the annual Black Friday stocking event not only promotes outdoor recreation but also supports local communities that benefit from increased tourism and fishing-related activities.
Jason Wettstein, a spokesperson for WDFW, explained that the event gives people "a fun, affordable way to spend time with family and friends after the holiday." Many of the stocked lakes offer easy access for anglers of all ages and skill levels, making it an inclusive community event.
The stocked lakes span multiple regions, including western, central, and eastern Washington, with detailed locations listed on the WDFW’s official website. Anglers are advised to check local regulations and possess the appropriate fishing licenses before heading out.
"This is about creating lasting memories and inspiring people to explore the outdoors," said Wettstein.
