‘Well-known’ Burpengary sports coach charged with multiple historical child sexual offences

Allegations Against Elderly Coach

Police have charged an 87-year-old man from Burpengary with several historical child sexual offences. The man, described by authorities as a “well-known” local sports coach, allegedly used his authority to exploit children over several years.

Investigation and Charges

Queensland Police stated that the alleged offences occurred between the 1970s and 1990s while the man was coaching youth sporting teams in the Moreton Bay region. Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sexual Crime Group led the investigation after multiple victims came forward.

"These charges follow a comprehensive investigation into allegations of long-term abuse of children within community sporting environments," said a police spokesperson.

The man now faces nine counts of indecent treatment of children under 16. He was granted bail and is expected to appear in the Caboolture Magistrates Court in December.

Community Impact

Local authorities have urged anyone with further information to contact police, noting the sensitive nature of the inquiry and the importance of supporting victims of historic abuse. The community has responded with shock, given the coach’s longstanding presence in local sports.

Police emphasized: “No matter how much time has passed, we encourage victims to come forward. Investigators are committed to pursuing all credible information.”

Author Summary: Queensland police charged a long-time Burpengary sports coach, aged 87, with multiple historical child abuse offences dating back to the 1970s–1990s, following reports from former youth players.
