Typhoon Leaves Alaska Villages Flooded
Typhoon Halong, fueled by the Pacific's near-record warm surface temperatures, brought a storm surge to Western Alaska's Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta on Oct. 12, 2025.
The storm caused significant damage, with water pushing homes off their foundations and setting some afloat with people inside. Officials reported over 50 people rescued in Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, hundreds displaced, and at least one person dead.
According to Alaska meteorologist Rick Thoman of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the timing of the storm means recovery will be even more difficult than usual for these communities.
