Mozambican Woman Sentenced for Murder of 11-Year-Old Stepdaughter

A 37-year-old Mozambican woman, Clara Masinga, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for the murder of her 11-year-old stepdaughter, Jennifer Gumbi.

The sentencing was made by the Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela, ten years after the murder took place. Masinga pleaded guilty to premeditated murder, citing her motive as a desire to spite Jennifer's biological mother.

Masinga was in a relationship with Jennifer's father, Rodgers Gumbi, and lived with him at KwaMhlushwa, Phosaville Section, in the district of Malelane.

According to Monica Nyuswa, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mpumalanga, on March 21, 2015, Masinga sent Jennifer's friend to fetch her from home, then asked Jennifer to accompany her to her house, claiming an acquaintance wanted to buy her clothes.
