Children’s life chances at risk as 1 in 4 waiting over a year for NHS care close to home

Children's Life Chances at Risk Due to Long NHS Care Waiting Times

According to a new briefing by the Nuffield Trust, the community care waiting list for children has increased by 58% since 2022, outpacing the 23% increase for adults.

Children are facing extended waits for NHS community services, including pediatric services for developmental problems or disabilities. Notably, almost 1 in 4 children wait over a year, and 1 in 15 wait over two years for community care.

In comparison, only 1 in 100 adults wait over a year for community care. These delays can impact not only children's health but also their future life chances.

Long waits for essential healthcare can impact children's health and future life chances.

This briefing is part of the QualityWatch programme, a joint initiative between the Nuffield Trust and the Health Foundation.

Author's summary: Children face unacceptably long waits for NHS community services.
