Defining Nepali Identity
The recent protests and formation of a new government in Nepal have sparked discussions about the country's diversity and representation.
After the GenZ protests, youth collectives urged the new Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, to appoint ministers that reflect the country's diversity, including women, youth, and people from various ethnic and socio-cultural backgrounds.
Initially, Karki's Council of Ministers did not include a representative from the health sector, but later, bureaucrat and public health expert Sangeeta Mishra was appointed as Health Minister.
Mishra referred to herself as "Nepali, but a native Indian", revealing her naturalized Nepali citizenship.
However, this sparked outrage in the ultra-nationalistic online community, leading to the withdrawal of Mishra's name from the list of ministers, citing an ongoing investigation at the CIAA.
As a result, Prime Minister Karki's Cabinet remains incomplete, with plans to induct GenZ as ministers.
