Review: Black Phone 2
Director Scott Derrickson's horror sequel, Black Phone 2, sees the return of Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, and Madeleine McGraw as they face off against The Grabber once again.
Set in 1982, four years after the events of the first film, the story takes place in a snowy Christian holiday camp in rural Colorado, rather than the original's Denver basement.
- The narrative remains focused on the elements that worked well in the first film.
- The unsettling menace of a child killer and a beyond-the-grave plotline are still present.
- The film features gooey special effects to enhance the horror experience.
It remains a superficial exercise in creepy fun, but – like so many horror sequels – retreading familiar ground proves an exercise in diminishing returns.
Black Phone 2 premiered at Fantastic Fest and will be released globally from October 15.
