A registered charity in Mayo has secured three derelict houses that were previously vacant and subject to a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) during the construction of the Turlough to Westport dual carriageway in 2016/17.
The CEO of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly, confirmed the news at a recent monthly meeting, although the name of the charity has not been released until the deal is finalized.
The news was widely welcomed by all councillors.
Westport-based Fine Gael councillor, Peter Flynn, had a motion seeking that the funds from the sale of these properties be reinvested in local affordable or social homes. However, due to the charity's acquisition of three properties, he amended the motion to apply to the remaining three properties.
According to Kevin Kelly, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) sold the homes to Mayo County Council under strict criteria.
