Artifact of the Week: Jimmie Johnson Autograph
The 2011 NASCAR Cup Series race at the superspeedway featured tandem drafting, a short-lived phenomenon in the sport's history. Jimmie Johnson, aided by teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr., won by .002 seconds, tied for the closest finish in NASCAR history.
A checkered flag from the race, signed by both Johnson and Earnhardt Jr., has been found by archivist Sam Ulrich, along with Johnson's trophy from that day.
The couple that tandems together, signs together.
With 319 victories in points-paying races, checkered flags are common, but this signed flag is a unique artifact.
