In the decades since June West Brandt's older brother was killed in World War II, she has never forgotten her kind and artistic sibling.
Brandt, 93, was delighted to discover that a Dutch couple, Lisa and Guido Meijers, regularly visit a marker for her brother at a Netherlands cemetery.
“It’s wonderful for me to know that someone is there,”
said Brandt, who lives near Houston. The introduction to the Meijers came through a new initiative to increase connections between family members of those buried and remembered at the WWII cemetery and the Dutch people who have adopted each one.
This project aims to honor the memories of those who lost their lives in WWII.
Author's summary: Project unites Americans with Dutch honoring WWII fallen.
