Unions Sue to Stop AI Surveillance Powering Trump’s Deportation Scheme
Three major labor unions have sued the federal government to stop a social media surveillance program that revokes visas and green cards of immigrants with "hostile attitudes" about the government.
The program has suppressed the free speech of union members, including graduate students targeted for expressing pro-Palestine views.
The First Amendment applies to everyone who lives in the U.S.
This lawsuit, filed by three civil liberties groups, is the first to challenge the surveillance program itself, according to Lisa Femia, a lawyer with the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
The unions argue that the AI-powered program has been used to target people whose views the Trump administration doesn't like, including pro-Palestine students and commenters.
