In the Soviet era, the church in Malye Yasyrki was a spiritual center where people came for prayer and spiritual guidance from all over the Voronezh region and across the USSR.
The church's relic is the Pochaev Icon above the royal doors. Despite being a "hotbed of religious opium", the authorities seemed to turn a blind eye.
However, when a new wave of persecutions broke out in the 1960s, the authorities decided to close down one of the churches in the area, choosing Malye Yasyrki. The sisters and parishioners, including Nun Akulina (Opevalova), stood up for the church and travelled to Moscow to plead their case.
How did the authorities turn a blind eye to such a “hotbed of religious opium”?
The bravery of the sisters and parishioners was a testament to their devotion to their faith and their church.
