At-risk federal SBIR funding is transformative for some Nebraska startups. Even with uncertainty, more should apply - Silicon Prairie News

SBIR Funding for Nebraska Startups

Despite uncertainty, Nebraska startups are encouraged to apply for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, a potentially transformative source of funding.

In 2010, Carrick Detweiler, a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, began working on drones and robotics. His experimentation with a water-sampling drone led to interest from potential clients, prompting him to explore entrepreneurship.

“We’re like, ‘Well, we kind of need a team of graduate students right now to get it to work,’”

Detweiler recalled. This experience ultimately led to the creation of his startup, Drone Amplified, which utilizes drones for various applications, including controlled burns, avalanche management, and whale tagging.

Authors summary: SBIR funding can be transformative for Nebraska startups.
