Maria Zhodik: From Belarus to Poland
Maria Zhodik, a Belarusian high jumper, now competes for the Polish national team and has won a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Originally from Baranovichi, Zhodik was granted Polish citizenship in March 2024, allowing her to compete under the Polish flag since June, thanks to her Polish grandparents.
I thought I should find a job. But it was difficult without knowing Polish.
Initially, Zhodik faced financial and language difficulties in Poland, leading her to work at a McDonald's restaurant.
Despite the challenges, Zhodik feels a sense of belonging in Poland.
