Abbas Names Hussein al-Sheikh as Temporary Successor
Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has appointed Hussein al-Sheikh as his temporary successor.
Hussein al-Sheikh, a longtime Palestinian political figure and former prisoner in Israel, was appointed Deputy Chairman by Abu Mazen last year.
- Al-Sheikh will temporarily assume leadership of the PA in the absence of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
- His interim term will last up to 90 days.
- During this period, direct elections must be held to select a new chairman, in accordance with Palestinian election law.
A statement outlining the succession process was issued by Abbas on Sunday, as reported by the Palestinian news agency Wafa.
