Abbas Names Hussein al-Sheikh as Temporary Successor for PA Presidency
Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has outlined the succession process in the event of a vacancy in the chairman's position.
Hussein al-Sheikh, a longtime Palestinian political figure and former prisoner in Israel, was appointed Deputy Chairman and designated successor by Abbas last year.
- Al-Sheikh will temporarily assume leadership of the PA in the absence of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
- His interim term would last up to 90 days.
- Direct elections must be held to select a new chairman within this period, in accordance with Palestinian election law.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Abbas issued a statement on Sunday outlining the succession process.
