New World Screwworm Not Seen as Trade Threat

Canadian cattle producers shouldn't be worried about the New World screwworm, which has become a huge concern in Mexico and the southern U.S.

A University of Calgary veterinary professor states that the New World screwworm is a massive concern for ranchers in Mexico and is threatening the southern United States, but it's not a significant threat to Canadian cattle producers.

The tick is more problematic in a wider geographic area (in North America)

However, another pest, the Asian longhorned tick, which is already in the U.S., is something that Canada's livestock industry should be monitoring, as its spread has not been stopped despite efforts to do so.

Author's summary: Canadian cattle producers are not threatened by the New World screwworm.
