Malaysian Government to Implement Lemon Law
The government of Malaysia is set to amend the Consumer Protection Act 1999 to incorporate elements of a lemon law, as announced by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2026.
This move follows a six-month feasibility study carried out last year, which concluded that a specific legal framework is needed to address issues and limitations related to consumer protection in the automotive industry.
Clear definition and criteria are needed for the implementation of the lemon law.
The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) welcomes the government's move, but emphasizes the need for a clear definition and criteria for the law.
