Minns Labor Government Cracks Down on Illicit Tobacco
The Minns Labor Government has begun shutting down illicit tobacconist stores, with two stores in St Leonards being the first to be closed under the new laws.
These stores were shut down immediately for 90 days due to selling illicit tobacco and illegal vaping goods.
Powers of NSW Health
NSW Health now has the power to make short-term closure orders of up to 90 days for premises selling illicit tobacco or illegal vaping goods without a licence.
- Short-term closure orders: up to 90 days
- Long-term closure orders: up to 12 months, issued by the Local Court if a breach has occurred
Enforcement and Seizures
NSW Health inspectors, supported by NSW police, are carrying out raids and issuing closure orders on offending businesses.
During inspections, 3,860 illicit cigarettes and 224 illegal vapes were found and seized.
No comment from the stores or businesses involved.
