Craig Melvin’s Columbia homecoming tour

Craig Melvin’s Columbia Homecoming Tour

Columbia looked great on national TV this week. Hootie & the Blowfish played as the TODAY show launched its “Homecoming” series, featuring host Craig Melvin exploring Soda City alongside his brother Ryan. Here’s a look at Melvin’s visit to Cola.

King’s Barber Shop Visit

The first stop was King’s Barber Shop on Main Street, where Craig still goes to Tremaine for a fresh haircut whenever he’s in town. Clippers buzzed while they talked sports and reflected on how much the Capital City has evolved over the years.

Sentimental Return to St. John Preparatory School

Next, Craig made an emotional visit to St. John Preparatory School, where he, Ryan, and fellow alum A’ja Wilson began their education. Wilson’s grandfather founded the school in 1971. Craig grew nostalgic exploring his old classroom and reading a book to current students.

Lunch at Lizard’s Thicket

For lunch, Craig, Ryan, and their mother Betty Jo Melvin enjoyed classic Cola fare at Lizard’s Thicket. They shared family memories over meat and three sides accompanied by sweet tea.

Walk Through Finlay Park Renovation

The trio then toured the recently renovated Finlay Park, where the fountain is flowing again. Mayor Daniel Rickenmann joined them for a preview of the $24 million update and discussed plans to double downtown's population. Craig tried out the new playground slide that runs down the hill.

Evening at Lula Drake Wine Parlour

To end the day, the brothers visited the James Beard award-winning Lula Drake Wine Parlour, toasting “the new Columbia” with a Paper Plane cocktail made using locally owned Forbidden Bourbon.

“This city has changed so much, and it’s incredible to see it thriving again,” Craig said during his tour.

Author’s summary: Craig Melvin’s heartfelt homecoming tour highlighted Columbia’s growth, historic roots, family ties, and vibrant community spirit through meaningful visits and local experiences.
