CFIA moving ahead with 'complete depopulation and disposal' at ostrich farm after Supreme Court of Canada decision - Nelson News

CFIA Continues Ostrich Cull Following Supreme Court Decision

The Supreme Court of Canada denied the last appeal against the order to cull a flock of ostriches at the Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, British Columbia. This ruling allows the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to proceed with a full depopulation and disposal of the birds.

Farm Owner Vows to Hold Authorities Accountable

Katie Pasitney, a representative of the ostrich farm, expressed gratitude for the global support received but stated her determination to hold the agencies responsible accountable.

"I know that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has made a massive amount of mistakes here. They can't follow their own mandate. They can't follow their own policy."

Pasitney revealed that recent farm activities have been recorded on video and pledged to make it her family’s mission to ensure accountability.

Legal Battle and Support

The cull order was first issued in December last year, and Pasitney and her family have been contesting it for ten months, emphasizing that their fight is far from over.

"CFIA you can stop, you can be the heroes that everyone deserves. It's a painful moment in history, a painful moment."

US billionaire John Catsimatidis, who funded the farm’s legal defense and rallied international support, plans to hold a press conference regarding the decision.

CFIA Statement

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed it will proceed with the cull following the Supreme Court's dismissal of the appeal.
