Why resident says intersection in Birmingham neighborhood is ‘an accident waiting to happen’

Dangerous Intersection in Birmingham Neighborhood

Families living near the intersection of Eton and Sheffield in Birmingham report that crossing the street is hazardous due to drivers ignoring stop signs. The four-way stop, close to Woodward and West 14 Mile, is described by resident Kimberly as "an accident waiting to happen."

Residents' Concerns

Locals express worry about speeding and reckless driving, which puts children and pedestrians at risk. Kimberly highlighted the frequent pedestrian activity in the area, including people walking dogs, pushing strollers, jogging, and biking.

“People are flying through the intersection and they’re not paying any attention to people around them.”

Observation of Traffic Behavior

Local 4 observed the intersection on a weekday morning. While no drivers were seen speeding, many performed slow rolls through the stop signs rather than coming to a full stop.

Speed Concerns

The speed limit near the intersection is 25 mph, yet residents say many exceed this limit.

“When I’m driving along here, most people are driving much faster than that,” said Tim, Kimberly’s husband. “I’ve been passed on Eaton in the residential area doing 25. They’re very dangerous.”

Impact on Pedestrians

Kimberly admits to feeling paranoid crossing the street at this location and finds walking the neighborhood stressful due to the unsafe driving habits observed.

“I’m paranoid when I have to cross here. We walk the neighborhood a lot and it scares me.”

Potential Solutions

The residents believe that some changes to the intersection could improve safety for everyone.
