James McClean has faced abuse throughout his career due to his refusal to wear a poppy, a symbol of remembrance in the UK. He admits that his teammates are often surprised but respectful when he explains his reasons.
McClean, who grew up on the Creggan estate in Derry, where about half of the 13 unarmed civilians killed on Bloody Sunday in 1972 lived, has firmly stood by his decision. He has clarified that he cannot wear the poppy because it represents all conflicts involving the UK, which causes him distress and leads to abuse and even death threats.
Despite the controversy, McClean says his teammates generally understand his views once he explains them.
The issue resurfaces every year before Remembrance Day, and McClean has expressed his wish that the debate would end. In a recent interview with Westlife singer Nicky Byrne, the 36-year-old voiced frustration over constantly defending his beliefs.
"I wish the controversy that has haunted me since my time at Sunderland in 2012 would just disappear."
He also revealed that his wife once feared for his safety, worrying he might be shot live on television due to the intense hostility he faces.
James McClean's refusal to wear the poppy is deeply tied to his personal history, stirring ongoing controversy and misunderstanding despite respectful dialogue with teammates.
