England coach Shaun Wane has adjusted his 19-man squad for Saturday’s last Ashes Test against Australia, introducing two new players. Hull KR winger Joe Burgess and Leeds Rhinos centre Harry Newman are set for their first England appearances in this autumn’s series.
Burgess and Newman join the squad following injuries to Dom Young, who broke his foot in the second Test, and Wigan's Jake Wardle. Burgess, originally from Wigan, hasn’t played for England since the 2015 series against New Zealand. Newman played in England’s 2-0 victory over Samoa last year.
Leigh Leopards forward Owen Trout and St Helens hooker Daryl Clark, who were 18th and 19th men previously, may also be reconsidered. John Bateman remains out due to an ankle injury sustained before the second Test.
Australia has already won the Ashes series with one game remaining. Despite this, Wane emphasizes the team’s goal of ending the series positively in front of a sold-out AMT Headingley.
“Of course, we are disappointed not to be going into this final game with the opportunity to win the Ashes, but the goal now is to come away from the series with a victory,” said Wane.
“We did a lot of good things last week, but ultimately, we need to be even better if we want to get a win this weekend.”
