Lakers legend Robert Horry voiced criticism of Luka Doncic despite the star player's 35 points and 13 assists in a win over the Spurs. Doncic attempted 27 shots but made only nine, including four from three-point range.
In the third quarter, Doncic struggled, going 1 of 9 from the floor as the Lakers were outscored 37-28. The Spurs built a 12-point lead before LA cut it to six after free throws by Smart, Doncic, and Hayes. During this quarter, Hachimura, who had been efficient earlier with 4 of 5 shots, had no attempts while Doncic played almost the entire period, controlling the offense solo.
However, in the fourth quarter, Doncic shared the ball more, giving Hachimura four shot attempts. Both players hit crucial three-pointers late in the game. Hachimura made one assisted by Doncic with 5:15 left, trimming the Spurs’ lead to two points. Then Doncic hit arguably the biggest shot at 2:31, putting the Lakers ahead 113-112. The Lakers maintained this lead to secure a 118-116 victory.
Doncic acknowledged his offensive struggles, including four turnovers and poor shooting through much of the game. Despite this, his defense stood out, especially against Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama. Doncic recorded five steals and two blocks, earning widespread praise.
“Luka Doncic didn’t hide the flaws in his offensive performance against the Spurs. However, he was near flawless on the defensive end.”
Luka Doncic’s uneven offensive night was offset by his strong defense and key plays down the stretch, but criticism from Lakers legend Robert Horry highlights ongoing questions about his pace and shot selection.
